Good country. Better stories.

Send us what you know.

There are two ways to work with Doghobble. The atlas takes photographs and local knowledge, given freely and always credited. The magazine commissions photographers and writers, and pays them.

Free, credited and linked

The atlas

Photographs of places in the atlas

Your own pictures of a range, a river, a peak or a habitat we cover. We credit you by name beside the photo and on the Credits page, with a link to your site or Instagram. You keep the copyright, and we'll take a photo down whenever you ask.

Tell us where and roughly when you took it. We only name a place in a caption if you do.

Send a photo
Plants and animals for the Field Guide

Clear pictures of a species or a habitat in the Field Guide, taken in the territory. Same credit, same link, same terms.

Tell us what you think it is and the county you found it in. We'll keep the exact spot to ourselves.

Corrections and local knowledge

If a page gets something wrong, or misses something you know firsthand, tell us how you know it. We check before we change anything, and we credit the help if you would like.

Name the page, and the source or the story behind what you know.

The magazine

Photography

Work made in this country over time: long sequences, a place across its seasons, the people who work the ground. Printed across the full spread of an 11 × 14 page.

Send a link to your work and a few lines on what you have been shooting.

Send your work
Writing

Reported pieces and essays tied to a place in the territory, from the Cumberland Plateau to the Smokies. Natural history, local history, food and farming, the people who stayed and the ones who came back.

Send a short pitch: what the story is and how you came to it, with a link to something you have written.

Send a pitch
A story you know but won't write

A farm, a family, a creek with a history, a fight over a piece of ground. You don't have to be a writer. If we report it, we'll talk to you first.

Tell us the story in a few lines, and how to reach you.

The terms, plainly

Pay
Magazine work is paid a flat fee on publication, agreed before the work starts. Atlas contributions are unpaid and credited.
Rights
For the magazine we buy first print rights, and you keep the copyright. An atlas photo is shown on this website only, with your credit, until you ask us to take it down.
Real work
Photographs must be your own and of a real place. No AI-generated or composited images, and no AI-written text.
Rare things
We never publish the location of a rare plant or animal. If your photo would give one away, we'll crop it or keep the place vague.
No paid placement
Nobody can pay to appear in the magazine or the atlas. A submission from a business is read like anyone else's.
Sending
Everything goes to hello@doghobblemag.com. For big files, send a link. The first issue is still in development; we read everything, but replies can be slow.
